Saturday Market: ArtPause on etsy

Map of the World by ArtPause.etsy.com

I am really enamored with this Map of the World from old postcards.  It has a few things going for it.
It's a map.
It's black and white.
It's made from old postcards.

Enough said.

Thursday Link Love: Crankbunny

By far one of my favorite card shops is Crankbunny.  I just noticed that she came out with a new book on making your own how-to book called The Secret Society of Paper Cuts.

Amongst the favorites in her shop are the Tatooed Bearded Man and Lady Puppets.  I bought my girlfriend one of the Pop Up Flower Cards.  And I splurged and bought myself the Perpetual Calendar.  Her illustrations are fabulous and the mechanics of each card are fascinating.   Every product I have purchased from her is of the highest quality, so I'm sure this book will be fabulous too!

Tuesday Post: Mailbox Map app

www.mailboxmap.com

I found this cool app via my friend Missive Maven.  I can't tell you how many times that I have been running errands in neighborhoods that were not my own and had a package to mail.  In MailboxMap, you type an address into the search bar and it will pin the nearest USPS mailboxes and Post Offices on the map.  AND, as if that is not handy enough, it tells you the pick up times!  That in its self is worth its weight in gold.  I even use that now for the mailboxes in my own neighborhood - because some mailboxes have a pickup time of 12:30 and others 5:30.  YAY for a fabulous and handy app - and YAY for friends who lead you to apps that simplify your life!

Deltiology 101: reasons to keep postcards

My mom just gave me a postcard that I had sent her in 1985.  She kept it for 28 years.  She didn't remember if it was because of the tender message, or that I was apologizing for something, or if it was because she's a pack rat.  Either way, I'm so excited that she gave it back to me.  I'm choosing to believe she saved it because she is deep down sentimental and knew I loved her despite all the grief I was giving her.

The Tuesday Post: How to digitize slides

photos ©2013 Max & Co. Post

I recently came upon some old slides - some from Germany in the 1950's, some from the Seattle World's Fair in 1962, and some from random places in Europe.  In this day of digital photos, it was obvious that I had to scan them so that I could store them on my computer.  Fortunately, I have a Canon Photosmart printer / scanner that came with a slide scanner accessory.  The first attempt scanning a slide turned out to be way to dark.  And blurry.  And very, very blue.  I adjusted the scanner settings to lighten up the photo, but then there was very little contrast and the dust was insane.  I tried leaving the lid open which produced a gray scale photo with vertical lines.  I tried covering the photo with something that would reflect the light (glossy photo paper, glass, shiny stainless steel), all to no avail.  I even played with the scanned photo in photoshop for about 30 minutes trying to manipulate it into a usable photo.

Then I found this post about the "other way" to scan slides - i.e. use your camera.  I set up a little light box, with a "light wall", black felt on top to block out ambient light, the slide accessory from the scanner to mask the back light, a mini-tripod and my cheap macro lens.  Voila.  It worked like a charm.  All of the photos came out crisp, properly exposed and not to saturated.
